The years before World War I saw the arrival at Barça of many foreign players such as Manuel Mas i Domènech (a Catalan born in Spain who played for Italy)； Josep Samitier (who arrived from Catalonia’s strongest rival team， Espanyol); Joan Segarra; Miquel Costas; Agustí Montalà and others. In those days， there was no league competition because it had not yet been officially sanctioned but teams still managed to organise local fixtures through regional championships or cup competitions. It wasn't until after the war ended and following the creation of the First Spanish Republic in April 1931， when the national leagues became regular events and the championship began to be contested formally， although only two rounds were completed before the Civil War broke out．
During the early post-war period under coach Juan Agirre， which lasted three seasons starting from 1940-41， Barça enjoyed its greatest success ever up to then： they won all domestic trophies bar one during this era including four consecutive Copa del Rey titles between 1942-43 and 1945-46， five Ligas consecutives from 1942-43 to 1946-47 and even triumphed in the Intercontinental Cup thanks to some excellent performances led by the club captain László Kubala and his teammates who were called the “Dream Team” owing to the quality of their talent.
